News Letter February 2018

Dear Members

The end of another bowling season will soon be upon us, my how time flies!

We have had yet another good intake of new members and hopefully most of them have been able to get into a league with the advent of the early morning leagues.

We all enjoyed our Annual Dinner at Pannal Golf Club with guest speaker Peter McCormick ably presided over by Gill Godden our Club Honorary President.

Yet another successful Christmas Programme – again thanks to Angela Hollingworth for drawing up the programme and organising prizes. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances the Maureen Ryan Trophy had to be unavoidably postponed until the first weekend in February, the winners of this trophy were John Harrison, Roland Laurence and Cheryl Swift a photograph of which can be seen on the website – many thanks to Jo Bonsels for keeping this updated.

On the House Committee front, this year’s project will see the refurbishment of the ladies and gentlemen’s toilets.

A plea to all members, the club is run voluntarily and it is your responsibility to make sure that any cups/glasses you use are returned to the kitchen after use.

Men’s Section News

Another successful year with Division wins in both County Div 2 and Over 55 Div 2 a very likely outcome. The Div 3 team continue to improve year on year and the introduction of a number of new members has certainly strengthened the team.

In the Nationals Dave Spilsbury has reached the Area final of the Over 60 singles, James Frith, Steve Webster, Cath Shaw and Angela Hollingworth reached the Area Final of the ‘Mixed Fours’ and Dave Small, Ronnie Green and Dave Spilsbury have reached the Area Final of the ‘Over 50 Triples’. Another successful foray into the Nationals.

I would like to thank all of the members for their continued support this year and in particular Ronnie Green as Vice Captain and also Jeff Bastow who has been a huge help with organising the Div 3 teams this year.

As always, I have to mention Jenny Woolley, Sheila Bastow and Margaret Chapman for their invaluable help with providing the butties on match days, a service which has become the envy of the other clubs in the County.

I look forward to continued success for the club over the next few years and wish all of you continued enjoyment of your bowls whether indoors or out.

Roy Legate – Men’s Secretary/Captain

Ladies’ Section News

The end of the season is already creeping up on us and I am sure, like many of you, do not know where the time has gone!

As usual, we played in the Yetton and Egham Trophies and in both these competitions we met our nemesis York and were defeated although in the Egham we did give them a “run for their money” in the third round. In respect of the Egham I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all the players but in particular “our men” for their support in this mixed competition and of course our umpires, Angela Hollingworth and Lesley Dearlove.

We have continued to play in the first division of the Yorkshire Ladies League and so far have not had much success although we do have two games still to play.

This year the North Eastern League was split into two divisions and we have one game still to play but as with the Yorkshire Ladies League we have not had the same success as last year.

Despite finishing second in both these Leagues last year, it looks very likely that we will be going down into the second division next year. Whatever the outcome may be I would like to express my sincere thanks to all our ladies for their efforts and continued support.

The winners of last year’s Club Championships have been playing in the Champion of Champions and congratulations are due to Catharine Shaw who is through to the semi final of the ladies singles to be played against Doncaster, Tina White and Jenny Wright who are through to the semi final of the ladies pairs to be played against New Earswick, and Angela Spilsbury, Karen Bishop and Irene Small who are through to the semi final of the ladies triples to be played against North Cave.

As most of you will know, I am President of the Yorkshire Ladies Indoor Bowling Association for the 2017/2018 year and as a result of this, Harrogate will be hosting the Champion of Champions final on 8 April so I do hope that some, if not all of those in the semi-finals, will be playing in the final.

Some of our ladies entered the National Competitions and progressed well past the initial rounds and in particular, congratulations are due to Angela Spilsbury who has reached the Area Final of the Ladies Singles and Angela Spilsbury, Hazel Parker, Karen Bishop and Irene Small who are through to the Area Final of the ladies fours.

Once again, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my thanks to all the ladies (and men) who have given their time and done such a marvellous job with the catering and in particular to Roy Legate and his “team” for providing hot food on match days and not forgetting all the ladies who have made scones and baked cakes for our special events. We will be catering on our championship finals weekends so if you can help in any way it would be greatly appreciated (see Ladies’ Notice Board)

.I look forward to seeing a good many of you at our Ladies’ Annual Dinner at Ascot House on Friday, 16 March.

Jill Skinner – Ladies’ Secretary/Captain

League Secretary’s Report

All games were played in the first half of the league – many thanks. In the second half, we have quite a few games outstanding; please try to get them played as soon as possible. The last games for this winter season finish on the 30th March 2018. Details for any “play off” games will be posted on the League Notice Board. All outstanding games and “play off” games must be played by the 6th April. The Summer Programme will start on the 30th April – details will be on the Notice Board shortly.

Thanks to all who joined the New Members League, I hope you have enjoyed playing in the league.

The Aussie Pairs trial has been very successful with good feedback and will be a fixture next season on a Thursday at 9am.

The winter season will recommence on Monday 3rd September 2018.

The application forms for the Leagues in September will be available shortly at reception. Please fill in your forms as soon as possible. If you would like to enter a team for the first time, please fill in a form. Teams do drop out and it would be great to start next season with a full complement. Priority will be given to existing teams (until 30th March) no reminders will be given.

In the leagues, pairs must have at least 4 players and triples 5 players, to avoid any games being cancelled – you can also bring a sub in if necessary as long as they don’t skip. Please read section F Rules & Regulations for all League Competitions and Play-offs.

May I take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support and I look forward to receiving your application for next season.

Angela Hollingworth – League Secretary

Club Championships

First of all, remember that you are a member of a fantastic bowling club, you will not find another one like it anywhere.

The club championships are a very important part of the club’s identity and are always played in the right spirit so don’t spoil that by not completing your matches on time, it’s not fair on other competitors or indeed the volunteer club championship secretary.

If you enter the competitions be prepared to put yourself out occasionally, play at weekends, or at times you don’t usually play, book or play your matches before you go on holiday and don’t wait until you get back to try and fit it in. Because if not, I believe that some rules will have to change and I fear that we will lose some of the integrity that we have in our club championships.

Remember that it’s you club, your competitions, your responsibility and your choice, don’t lose what you already have.

Dress code for all finals “Whites” (not Club or coloured shirts), this applies also to the markers & umpires.

Refreshments will be available on all days as usual.

Gary Swift – Club Competition Secretary

Reminder - Dress Code

Men’s dress code is:-

Grey formal trousers (not casual i.e. chino or jean style) or a bowl’s manufacturers sports trouser.

Predominantly white shirts with a collar with a club bowls badge, manufacturers’ logo or members name in acceptable size is permitted on the shirt, pullover, sweater or cardigan.

Ladies as above with the exception that grey skirts/culottes may be worn.

PLEASE SEE THE CONSTITUTION BYELAWS SECTION ‘D’ FOR FULL DRESS REQUIREMENTS.

CAR PARKING

There have been many occasions this year, when our car park has been heavily used and available vacant spaces have been in short supply. This situation is made worse when cars are parked on or across the white lines making vacant spaces unusable.

PLEASE consider the needs of other members and PARK WELL WITHIN THE WHITE LINES.
