News Letter August 2017
A warm welcome to our winter bowling season. I thought that I would let you know what has been happening at the club during the summer months. The latest update is we have had air conditioning installed, the club redecorated and a new fire door. The notice boards, signage to boards and signs to relevant rooms within the building have been replaced.

On the site you will find news, leagues, championship details to name but a few and our thanks go to Ian Kennedy for setting up the site and Jo Bonsels and Shirley Cowans who will be keeping it up to date.
I would like to thank Mike Bower for his supply of freshly baked food at the Wednesday morning roll up throughout the summer months.
An early reminder, if you are able to assist with snow clearance please give your name to David Carter to enable him to collate names for the rota.
Dates for your diary
Annual subscriptions are due on 1st September if you play in a league your subs must be paid before you play. Please complete and return the form with your subscription and any Club Championship ‘Singles’ or ‘Open Pairs’ application forms as soon as possible to the Membership Secretary. Please note that the Fixture List and Handbook will replace membership cards this coming season. Your name and membership number will be printed on the back cover and you may be required to produce this to the receptionist on duty if required to do so.

I would like to wish you all every success in the coming season and every good wish to Jill Skinner in her Presidential year for Yorkshire Ladies Indoor Bowling Association. I would also like to add at this point that Irene Small has very kindly cross stitched and donated two cushions which will be displayed within the Club to be raffled to generate a contribution towards Jill’s Presidential expenses.
My thanks must go to all members of the Executive Committee, Coaches, Receptionists, and all those that give their time voluntarily, if you are able to help in any way however small please speak with a committee member.

The season for the leagues commences on Monday 4th September 2017 for 14 weeks. There will be NO ‘catch up week’, so teams must ensure they have enough players to cover holidays and illness.
The 2nd half of the League will commence on Monday 11th December 2017 for a week, plus Monday 18th, this is in place of Monday 1st January which is New Year’s Day. Then the Christmas Programme commences on the 19th December and the 2nd half of the leagues will recommence on Tuesday 2nd January 2018 through to Friday 30th March 2018. Again there will be NO ‘catch up week’.
Please try to keep up to date with your league games, I fully understand the outdoor season carries on during September, but it is unfair to other bowlers not to play your league games on time. You are responsible for having other players in your team to cover all eventualities.
Should you require a substitute, please ensure they are not already in a team in that league and that they
are playing in the correct positions. (See the League rules attached to the league notice board or look in the Constitution & Rules Book)
Please can I ask you again to ensure your cards are filled in correctly and the scores are on the correct side, always fill in the NAMES of the players (initials & surname) in the correct order play and agree the scores at the end before signing the card.

Monday – Men’s Triples at 8.30pm

New Members League - I am sure this will be filled at the beginning of the season. The start date for this league will not be until October.

Men’s Section News
A slightly disappointing season with the Over 55 team being relegated to Div 2 for next year. However we finished mid table in both divisions of the County League. The heavy fixture congestion after Christmas did make it difficult for some players to be available for all matches which always makes it a challenge for consistency.
On the home front it was great to see a lot of new names doing so well in the club championships which bodes well for the future at inter club level. In nationals our men did us proud yet again and special mention must go to Ronnie Green and Dave Spilsbury who made it to the finals of the “Over 60” Pairs. On behalf of Ronnie and Dave I would like to thank everyone that made the effort to travel down and support them.
Gary Swift played for the winning England team in the Disability Bowls Home Nations tournament and then went on to Captain the victorious North Region in the Top Region competition with Keith Urquhart also playing in the winning team. A great achievement for both players.
I should like to thank all the ladies who helped with the catering at matches, in particular Jenny Woolley, Sheila Bastow and Margaret Chapman. This is a service which is greatly appreciated by the players of both home and visiting teams and simply wouldn’t be possible without the help of these ladies.
I hope you are all having a great summer season either indoor or outdoor and I look forward to next year.

Ladies’ Section News
Once again we rounded off the season with our ladies’ dinner at Ascot House and an enjoyable evening was had by all who attended. My thanks again to Karen Bishop for organising the event.
We have been playing in Division A of the Yorkshire Ladies League and I am delighted to confirm that we will be continuing to play in this Division next season as our final position was second in the table.
This season we entered the North Eastern League for the very first time specifically to accommodate and encourage some of our more recent members to play at County level. After all the games had been played the top position in the table was held by Harrogate and Doncaster on equal points of 48. However, Doncaster won the top spot on shot difference their having 65 shots to our 39 shots.
I am so proud of all the ladies in securing second place in both the Yorkshire Ladies and North Eastern Leagues and I thank each and every one of them for their help and support in achieving this success. Congratulations to you all.
I, along with Catharine Shaw and Irene Small attended the AGM of the Yorkshire Ladies Indoor Bowling Association on 19 April 2017.
There were two propositions put forward at the AGM both by Scarborough and both seconded by New Earswick – one to split the North Eastern League into two divisions and the other to have the number of ends played in both the Yorkshire Ladies League and the North Eastern League changed from 21 ends to 18 ends – both propositions were carried and will come into effect this coming season.
The appointment of Officers took place when I was handed the President’s chain of office.
The finals of the Champion of Champions competition were played at Selby on 9 April 2017 with Angela Spilsbury playing in the ladies singles final and Tina White, Marlene Laurence, Jill Skinner and Jenny Wright playing in the ladies fours. Regrettably both finalists were runners up.
The fixture lists for the 2017/2018 season for the Yorkshire Ladies League, North Eastern League, Yetton and Egham Trophies are all on the ladies’ notice board so please make a note of these in your diary.
Once again, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my thanks to all the ladies (and men) who have given their time and done such a marvellous job with the catering and in particular our men’s Captain, Roy Legate and his “team” for providing hot food on match days and not forgetting all the ladies who have made scones and baked cakes and all manner of wonderful things for our special events.
As in previous years there will be a “catering” list on the Ladies’ Notice Board and your help again this coming season will be greatly appreciated.

The 2017/2018 Club Championship final weekends will be held earlier this season, this is due to the fact that Mothering Sunday is on the 11th March and Easter is early with Good Friday being 30th March. So the Club Championship finals will take place over the weekends of Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th March and Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th March.
With this in mind it will be imperative that matches are completed by said play by dates, these are your championships so please try and help them run as smoothly as possible.
As always, enjoy your bowling and good luck in what you enter.
Just a reminder – only two rinks can be booked for Club Competitions in a social booking and please only book one rink at a time for each competition.
